Dear Friends,
As we write this, our family is gathered around the fireplace at our Apple Haven farmette. While here, we often think about you and wonder what you are doing these days… To nurture our friendship, we wish to share some of 2012’s highlights:
We would love to hear how you are doing. When you have a chance, please be in touch. We wish you a blessed new year and enough energy to overcome any challenges. We welcome you to visit us at Apple Haven where there is “good company, good food, and several job openings… for which everyone qualifies!”

As we write this, our family is gathered around the fireplace at our Apple Haven farmette. While here, we often think about you and wonder what you are doing these days… To nurture our friendship, we wish to share some of 2012’s highlights:
- We enjoy being at Apple Haven whenever possible – it’s an ideal place for brainstorming, relaxing, and intellectual and physical activities. In addition to our organic garden (produce ranges from herbs and vegetables to exotic fruit including kiwi, Asian pears, pomegranate, persimmon, and jostaberries) we now have rabbits, sheep, and chickens (and enjoy fresh eggs daily)
- Our summer music institute (www.imif.us) continues to draw wonderful young musicians from around the world. Our dedicated faculty have greatly contributed to the success of this undertaking and came together throughout the year for benefit concerts for the scholarship fund.
- Cecylia, Elizabeth, and Frances premiered William Milner’s Sonata for 2 Cellos and Piano, and Cecylia premiered a Cello Concerto by contemporary Cuban composer Jorge Martin Lopez (http://www.cecyliabarczyk.com/international-cello-festival.html)
- Frances is in her second year of graduate studies at Peabody. Together with her trio, she won the Levine School Chamber Music Competition in Washington D.C., which led to performances at the Kennedy Center and the Bulgarian Embassy.
- Emmanuel completed his graduate studies at Indiana University. After his final Master’s program, his teacher praised him highly and exclaimed “You did it!” In January he will begin his doctorate studies at the University of Maryland.
- Elizabeth’s “Piano Prodigies” (www.PianoProdigies.com) have shared music with many people this year, and received several awards. During the Spring semester she also taught full time at Morgan State University.
- Charles has not only supplied creative ideas, but has frequently brought them to reality. We all became his “subcontractors” to realize his architectural designs for an addition to our house, as well as a chicken-rabbit-sheep “hotel.” As a member of the German Society of Pennsylvania Board of Directors, he organized a “lobster feast” benefit event. As usual, the entire family (with a few brave friends) pulled together to make it happen – cooking, serving, entertaining, and … cleanup for 100 guests.
- Charles and Cecylia are celebrating their 35th anniversary this year! They will be celebrating throughout the year and invite you to join them for some special events.
We would love to hear how you are doing. When you have a chance, please be in touch. We wish you a blessed new year and enough energy to overcome any challenges. We welcome you to visit us at Apple Haven where there is “good company, good food, and several job openings… for which everyone qualifies!”
